The 10-foot manatee was rescued in Brevard County near the Florida Power & Light CCEC plant in February. When Yago was found he was thin and swimming sideways, both conditions associated with the unusual mortality affecting manatees on the east coast.

Yago is known in the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission manatee database, with sightings dating back to 1993.

FWC said manatees are typically released in the general area of their rescue, but Yago has been seen multiple times at Blue Springe State Park in past, as recently as winter 2019.
