ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A toddler was rushed to the hospital on Wednesday night after falling from a balcony at an Orlando hotel. The Orange County Sheriff's Office said the incident happened at an Econo Lodge Inn & Suites on International Drive (see map).
The toddler's mother apparently stepped out of the room and left the child in the care of another woman, deputies said. Deputies said that's when the toddler crawled over to the balcony on the fourth floor and went over the ledge.
A British tourist saw it happen and rushed over to try to catch the falling child. The tourist wasn't able to catch the child, but was at least able to break the fall. Deputies said that if it weren't for the tourist, the toddler would probably have died.
The Department of Children and Families said the family is from the Tampa area. The Orange County Sheriff's Office and DCF are both investigating. The child, whose name and age was not released, was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital with a head injury. The child's condition is unknown.
