Car with human skeletal remains pulled from Florida pond

PALM HARBOR, Fla. — A car linked to a missing man from 2006 was found Friday with human skeletal remains inside in Palm Harbor, Florida, officials said.

A spokesperson with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to WFLA that the car was found inside a body of water around 7 a.m.

The car was registered to Robert Helphrey, according to WFTS. Helphrey was last seen on May 22, 2006, after leaving a restaurant in the area.

A missing person’s poster at the sheriff’s office reportedly said Helphrey told some friends he was going home but no one heard from him again, according to the news outlet. He was 34 years old at the time of his disappearance.

The Sunshine State Sonar dive team, a volunteer search group, helped investigators find the car, according to WFLA. The Sunshine State Sonar dive team recently helped investigators recover a missing teacher’s car in Volusia County, Florida, last week.

The medical examiner’s office is expected to identify the remains and determine the cause of death, WFLA reported.
