Coronavirus: Cleveland Guardians’ game against White Sox postponed over COVID-19

Wednesday’s game between the Cleveland Guardians and Chicago White Sox was postponed due to multiple positive COVID-19 tests within the Guardians organization, Major League Baseball announced.

Guardians manager Terry Francona and bench coach DeMarlo Hale both had positive tests on Wednesday morning, the Chicago Tribune reported. The game had been scheduled for a 2:10 p.m. CDT start at Chicago’s Guaranteed Rate Field.

The game was postponed to allow officials to conduct more testing and contact tracing, ESPN reported. MLB said it will provide a rescheduling update when it becomes available.

Francona will not manage during the Guardians’ weekend series against the Minnesota Twins, WJW-TV reported.

Wednesday’s outbreak was limited to Francona, the Guardians’ coaching staff and support staff, the Plain Dealer reported. Players had not been tested as of Wednesday, according to the newspaper.

Wednesday’s postponement was the first this season because of COVID-19, ESPN reported. Nine games were postponed last season and 45 were scrubbed during the shortened 2020 season, according to the sports network.

Guardians’ players Owen Miller, Yu Chang and pitchers Cal Quantrill and Anthony Castro have been placed on the COVID-19 injury list, ESPN reported.
