First lady Jill Biden will be visiting Romania and Slovakia later this week to visit with refugees from the Russian invasion of Ukraine as well as to meet with U.S. military personnel stationed in Eastern Europe.
The two countries share a border with Ukraine and are also members of NATO, Fox News reported.
Biden will leave for Romania Thursday, first stopping at Mihail Kogalniceanu Airbase Friday.

She will then go to Bucharest Saturday to meet with the Romanian government and humanitarian aid workers. Romania has received the second-largest amount of Ukrainian refugees second only to Poland, CNN reported.
The United Nations’ refugee agency said almost 5.5 million people have fled Ukraine since the end of February when the Russian invasion started, The Washington Post reported.
Biden will also spend time with teachers who are helping Ukrainian children with their studies as they adjust to their new homes.

Saturday night Biden will travel to Bratislava, Slovakia to meet with U.S. embassy staff then will continue to Kosice and Vysne Nemecke, Slovakia, to meet with additional refugees and the Slovakians who have opened their doors to help those who have escaped Ukraine.
On Sunday, Biden will meet with mothers and children who have fled their homes, Reuters reported. Sunday is Mother’s Day in the U.S.
She will meet with members of the Slovakian government before heading home Monday.
This is Biden’s second solo trip. The first was to Japan for the Olympic opening ceremonies last July, Fox News reported.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visit Kyiv, meeting with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Pelosi told Zelenskyy that the U.S. will “be there for you until the fight is done,” the Post reported.
Pelosi was the highest-ranking member of the U.S. government to visit Ukraine since the invasion started, according to the Post.
