Indiana man drowns while rescuing girlfriend from Lake Michigan

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. — An Indiana man drowned Sunday after saving his girlfriend, who was struggling in the water along a beach on Lake Michigan, authorities said.

Donald Turner, 28, of Portage, was swimming with his girlfriend at the Washington Park beach in Michigan City when she began to struggle in the water, WTHR reported. According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Turner was able to pull his girlfriend to safety before he went underwater and did not resurface, the television station reported.

A person swimming nearby located Turner’s body several minutes later, according to The Associated Press.

Michigan City firefighters pulled Turner from the water and performed life-saving measures, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead, the newspaper reported.

The incident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. EDT, police said.

Authorities have not released the name of the woman.
