3 in custody after 7 people, including child, injured in East St. Louis shooting

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. — Authorities took three people into custody after seven people, including a child, were shot in a suburban St. Louis city on Thursday evening, authorities said.

Herb Simmons of St. Clair County Emergency Management said the shooting happened in East St. Louis, Illinois, KSDK reported.

Update 1:15 p.m. EDT Sept. 10: Three people are in custody following a shooting that injured seven people, including a child, in East St. Louis, according to multiple reports.

Authorities initially said six people were injured in the shooting.

Three people were taken into custody peacefully following an hours-long stand-off that ended around 2 a.m. Friday, KPLR-TV reported. The suspects were not immediately identified.

The seven people injured in the shooting were taken to a hospital for treatment, although their conditions remained unknown Friday, KSDK reported. The circumstances leading to the shooting were not clear.

Illinois State Police are investigating the incident, according to KLPR.

Update 11:35 p.m. EDT Sept. 9: Six people, including a child, were injured in the shooting in East St. Louis, KSDK reported. Police are still looking for the shooter or shooters, the television station reported.

The conditions of the victims are unknown at this time, KTVI reported.

Original report: It is unclear how many people were injured, or how many shooters were involved. Police said the shooting occurred at about 4 p.m. CDT outside East Side Meat Market, according to KTVI. Reports vary between six and 12 people injured, but police have not confirmed a specific number.

Six people have been taken to an area hospital, KSDK reported.

A vehicle was struck by a MetroLink train in the area, and police told KTVI it was involved in the shooting. No one was inside the vehicle when police arrived, the television station reported.

Police are searching for the suspects in a wooded area near the train crossing, KMOV reported.

MetroLink officials said there were approximately 10 passengers on the train, and they were being evaluated for possible injuries, the television station reported.

According to the Illinois State Police, “the situation is rapidly evolving,” KTVI reported.
