Chattanooga shooting: 3 dead, 14 injured near downtown bar

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Three people died and 17 others were injured on Sunday after a shooting near a bar in downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee, authorities said.

Update 3:05 p.m. EDT June 5: In a news conference Sunday afternoon, Chattanooga Mayor Tim Murphy said there were “a lot of families” who have been “forever shattered” by the shooting.

“Once again, we have people deciding to resolve their issues with firearms,” Kelly said. “While we’re still trying to gather the facts in this case, we know that many of the acts of violence in our community have revolved around a very small group of people -- often the same people -- over, and over again.

“Here’s my message to those individuals: We will relentlessly pursue you with all the resources we have available at our disposal.”

Update 11:15 a.m. EDT June 5: At a news conference Sunday, Chattanooga police Chief Celeste Murphy said there were 14 gunshot victims and three people were struck by vehicles. Murphy said two people died from gunshot wounds and one person died from injuries sustained after being struck by a vehicle while fleeing the scene.

Murphy added that it was believed multiple shooters were involved in the shooting, which occurred near Mary’s Bar and Grill on McCallie Avenue in downtown Chattanooga.

Murphy added that the wounded victims included one juvenile. She added that several of the victims were in critical condition.

There have been no arrests.

“This is once again a situation in which we find that we need help from the community to help us out with this, because we cannot do this by ourselves,” Murphy said. “This is clearly a tragic event for the families involved and the victims.”

Original report: The Chattanooga Police Department confirmed the shooting in an email to WTVC-TV.

“There have been multiple people shot on McCallie (Avenue),” a spokesperson for the department wrote to the television station. “Several of them are life-threatening injuries. I don’t have much more than that at this time.”

Chattanooga Police Department spokesperson Jeremy Eames confirmed to the Chattanooga Times Free Press that several people were shot, “some with life-threatening injuries. According to the newspaper, a 911 call was made at about 2:37 a.m. EDT.

According to WRCB-TV, the shooting took place at Mary’s Bar and Grill on McCallie Avenue.

The shooting comes a week after six people were wounded in downtown Chattanooga near the Tennessee Aquarium.

Two blocks were roped off near the scene of Sunday’s shooting, WTVC reported.
