‘Please don’t make me do this’: Florida deputy begs man to show hands before fatal shooting

RIVERVIEW, Fla. — An attempted warrant arrest turned deadly Tuesday night when a Florida deputy fatally shot a suspect, authorities said.

Dylan Ray Scott, 27, ignored commands to show his hands before deputies shot him Tuesday night, WTSP reported. Body camera footage released by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office showed Deputy Timothy Miskell attempting to coax Scott out of a pickup truck at an intersection near a McDonald’s in the Tampa suburb of Riverview, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

“The warrants that you have right now, you’ll get a bond,” Miskell tells Scott on the body cam video. “But if you make a bad decision right now, it could cost you your life.”

Scott was wanted on felony warrants of grand theft and resisting arrest, WTVT reported. Deputies approached Scott at around 10 p.m. in the parking lot of the McDonald’s, the television station reported.

When deputies approached, Scott sped away in his pickup but crashed into a passing minivan at an intersection, the Times reported.

“Well, knew it was coming,” Miskell says on the video.

Miskell ran to the driver’s window of the truck, the Times reported. Scott can be heard saying on the video that sounded like, “I got a pistol.”

“Yeah? Show me your (expletive) hands!” Miskell responds. Seconds later, Miskell says, “C’mon, man. It’s not worth it.

“We don’t take anything personally. I do not want to shoot you, but if you don’t show me your hands that’s what’s going to happen,” one deputy says in the footage “Please don’t make me do this.”

In the video, Miskell tells Scott to look and speak with him.

“It is not worth it,” Miskell says. “You are gonna die right there in that passenger seat if you don’t show me your hands. I know you’re hurting right now. We’ll get you help.”

Miskell asks Scott where the gun is.

“It’s in my waistband,” Scott says.

The deputies pleaded with Scott for nearly four minutes before shooting him when the man “motioned for a gun,” WFLA reported.

Scott was pronounced dead at Tampa General Hospital, the television station reported.

Hours later, state law enforcement officers learned that Scott never had a weapon, WTVT reported.

The four deputies involved in the shooting were placed on standard administrative leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the shooting, the Times reported. They were identified in a sheriff’s office news release as Miskell, a five-year veteran; Sgt. Michael Hannaford, an 18-year veteran; Cpl. Steven Schneider, who has been at the office for 11 years; and Deputy Devin Wooden, a 15-year-veteran of the department.

“The body-worn camera video shows the more than three minutes our deputies begged and pleaded with Dylan Scott as they tried to de-escalate the situation last night,” Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said at a news conference. “In any given situation, I never want it to end with someone losing their life. Our deputies did all they could to try to end last night’s events peacefully, and for the sake of transparency, I believe this video shows that effort.”
