Recall alert: Skittles, Life Savers, Starburst gummies recalled after metal strands found

The manufacturer of gummies products for Skittles, Life Savers and Starburst announced a voluntary recall over reports of thin metal strands found inside bags.

In a news release, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration said that Mars Wrigley Confectionery LLC ordered the recall in the U.S. and Canada because the metal strands were either embedded in the candies or loose in the bags in which they were contained.

According to the company, a recall has been issued for specific varieties of Skittles Gummies, Starburst Gummies and Life Savers Gummies.

“We received reports from consumers alerting us to this matter and are not aware of any illnesses to date,” Mars Wrigley Confectionery said in a news release.

The products were manufactured by a third party and distributed in the United States, Canada and Mexico, the FDA said.

Mars Wrigley Confectionery said it will work with retailers to remove recalled products from store shelves. If customers believe they purchased a recalled item, they are encouraged to dispose of it immediately.

“We are working closely with our retail partners to remove any potentially impacted products from stores,” a spokesperson from Mars Wrigley Canada said in a statement to CNN.

A 10-digit code on the back of the packaging will indicate whether the product could be impacted by the recall. Thirteen different brands of candy are subject to recall and their codes are listed on the FDA website.

The recall includes some varieties of:

  • Starburst Gummies Original Share Size 3.5 ounces.
  • Starburst Gummies Original Peg Pack 5.8 ounces.
  • Starburst Gummies Sours Share Size 3.5 ounces.
  • Starburst Gummies Sours Peg Pack 5.8 ounces.
  • Starburst Gummies Sour Berries Peg Pack 5.8 ounces.
  • Life Savers Gummies Five Flavor Peg Pack 7 ounces, 3.22 ounces.
  • Life Savers Wild Berries Gummies Peg Pack 7 ounces.
  • Life Savers Sour Gummies Peg Pack 7 ounces, 180 grams.
  • Skittles Gummies Original Peg Pack 5.8 oz, 2.93 ounces.
  • Skittles Gummies Original Stand Up Pouch 12 ounces.
  • Skittles Wild Berry Gummies Peg Pack 5.8 ounces, 2.93 ounces.
  • Skittles Gummies Wild Berry Stand Up Pouch 12 ounces.
  • Skittles Sour Gummies Peg Pack 5.8 ounces.
