Texas A&M WR Ainias Smith arrested on DWI, weapon charges

Texas A&M wide receiver Ainias Smith is accused of drunken driving, carrying a weapon and possessing marijuana, authorities said.

Smith, 21, who was beginning his fourth year with the Aggies, was arrested Wednesday morning by university police and charged with driving while intoxicated, the unlawful carrying of a weapon and possessing less than two ounces of marijuana, according to Brazos County jail records.

According a police report, Smith was arrested on a DWI charge after he was stopped for speeding at approximately 2:15 a.m. CDT Wednesday, ESPN reported. Smith was given a field sobriety test and was determined to be intoxicated, according to the police report.

The police report stated that a search of Smith’s vehicle revealed a “rolled joint of marijuana” and a handgun with a “full magazine and a round chambered” in the center console, the Houston Chronicle reported.

An officer then interviewed Smith at the Brazos County Jail and the player denied owning the handgun or the marijuana, according to the newspaper. A passenger who was released also denied owning the gun or marijuana, according to the probable cause statement.

Smith was suspended by Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher and will not attend SEC Media Days in Atlanta on Thursday, ESPN reported. He was one of three Aggies scheduled to appear alongside Fisher, along with defensive back Demani Richardson and offensive lineman Layden Robinson, according to AL.com.

Smith is Texas A&M’s top returning receiver after making 47 catches for 509 yards and six touchdowns during the 2021 season, according to Sports-Reference.com. He has 1,321 yards receiving with 15 touchdowns in three seasons with the Aggies, according to the website.

Smith was released later on Wednesday after posting $8,000 bail, online records show.
