LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — A worker was electrocuted Friday while helping install a platform at Disney's Wide World of Sports, the Osceola County Sheriff's Office told WFTV, and later died at Celebration Hospital.
911 CALLS: Witnesses Call For Help AT THE SCENE: Skywitness Over Wide World Of Sports
Osceola County sheriff's deputies said 50-year-old Steven Snyder was building a platform at the Wide World of Sports complex Friday morning when something went terribly wrong.
The victim worked for the Buena Vista Construction Company, which is a division of Disney. In a statement a representative wrote," Today, we are grieving with his family, friends and co-workers and extend our deepest sympathies to them. We have reached out to his family to offer our support during this difficult time."
The electrician was working on a transformer box when he was electrocuted. Other workers in the area called 911.
"911, is your emergency police, fire or medical?" the operator asked.
"I got a guy that's electrocuted and he's down. He's not breathing and it's inside Wide World of Sports inside Disney," the caller said.
The victim's wife told WFTV that her husband had been shocked while working at Disney in the past and blamed inexperienced coworkers. She wants to know if someone did something wrong to cause his death.
"I want to know exactly what happened. He's worked on those transformers for years," Tammy Snyder said.
Snyder said detectives showed up at her door this morning to tell her what had happened, but she said she already knew something had gone wrong.
"He said he would call me in a few hours and I didn't hear back from him...it just went straight to voicemail," Snyder said.
The victim's wife says, Walt Disney World is working with her right now and promises to help pay for her husband's funeral.
This isn't the first time there has been a death on Disney property. WFTV reported in April when a 9-year-old boy was killed on his bike when he crashed into a Disney bus. In July of last year, a pilot of a monorail was killed when another monorail reversed into him.
The Occupational Safety And Health Administration is also investigating Friday's death.
