Orlando City loses game in extra time; Orlando Pride salvage a point in Kansas City

ORLANDO, Fla. — Sunday was a not so fun day if you are a fan of Orlando City and the Orlando Pride.

The Lions cannot escape the curse of Wayne Rooney. What looked like three points away from home, ended in disappointment when D.C. United scored two goals in second-half stoppage time.

Orlando City looked poised to steal three points on the road when Junior Urso scored in the ninth minute.

The Lions seemed in control for much of the game and looked as though we would be sending Rooney home with his first loss as manager.

However stoppage time saw D.C. United’s Chris Durkin scoring in the 91st minute, followed four minutes later by a Taxiarchis Fountas goal.

The stoppage time goals sent the Lions home with no points and another Rooney highlight.

In the second game of the day, the Orlando Pride traveled to Kansas City Current for the last game of July, where the Pride was 1-0-2 going into Sunday.

The Pride’s Celia Jimenez scored her second goal this season with a header in the 25th minute past the Current’s Andrea French.

Julie Doyle put the Pride up 2-0 in the 46th minute when she battled through two defenders to score her first goal of the year.

In the second half, the Pride held on to its two-goal lead until the Current’s Elyse Bennett scored in the 57th minute.

A second goal by Cece Kizer gave the Current a draw and the teams both took a point for the day.

Both teams will be back at Exploria Stadium this weekend.

Orlando City will play the New England Revolution on Saturday, Aug. 6 and the Pride faces expansion team Angel City and former Pride player Sydney Leroux on Sunday, Aug. 7.
