Acid Bomb Explodes Outside Casselberry Home

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — A Casselberry family is shaken up after several acid bombs were planted in their front yard early Friday morning. One of them exploded just after midnight and police want to know who planted them at a family's home off Osceola Trail ( see map ), near State Road 434 in Casselberry.

The residents inside the home woke up when one of those bombs exploded.

Family members weren't allowed back in their homes until 3:30am Friday. The victim, who doesn't want to be identified, heard and felt a similar impact first hand.

"I was on my computer and I hear this loud boom, and then I ran to the door and all I saw was smoke," the victim told WFTV.

Four 20-ounce bottles, with some sort of chlorine, were placed in the front yard; one went off.

"It was a regular bottle. It just expands and then it blows," he said.

The others didn't go off until Seminole County's bomb unit triggered them.

"The one that blew up was 10 times louder than that. Sounded like an M-80 going off," the victim said.

The only obvious sign of the acid bomb was on the hood of one of the cars.

People who live there can't understand who would do this or why.

"As you can see on the car, it ate the metal away. It could've burned you really bad," the victim said.

Casselberry police don't have any leads, but even though no one was hurt they say it's a serious crime.

"Any bomb is going to be an issue," said Sgt. Jim Goodman, Casselberry Police Department." We don't know if the percussion was enough to hurt anyone with the percussion itself."

There were two small children inside the home during the incident.

Law enforcement says acid bombs are typically planted by teenagers and usually are placed in mailboxes. Prank or not, Casselberry police say, if anyone is caught they face felony charges, because there is potential for great bodily harm.
