ORANGE COUNTY, Fla.,None — Walt Disney World is going back to the drawing board on its plans to renovate Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom. WFTV found out park executives are having designers broaden the appeal beyond the original focus of animated princesses.
In a statement, Disney said, "We are making changes to Fantasyland. The project will add several new attractions. It is not unusual for changes to be made, especially with major additions this size."
The changes come just weeks after Universal Studios Orlando opened its new attraction, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. But Disney says the adjusted plans have nothing to do with the success of the Harry Potter attraction.
Disney would not say exactly how much the expansion is costing the theme park giant, but park officials say, even with the massive overhaul of the original plans, the new attraction is still on track to open in 2013.
Fantasyland is slated to boast an interactive three-ring circus tent, as well as princess-themed castles and cottages. It will also feature a new Little Mermaid ride. An existing Dumbo Elephant ride will also double in size.
Disney wouldn't give any other details about the planned changes.
