‘Be a superhero this holiday season’: Surgeon general warns of need for convalescent plasma

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — While news of the vaccine has been on everyone’s mind, the U.S. surgeon general doesn’t want people to lose track of the need for convalescent plasma.

Convalesescent plasma is pulled out of the blood of people who have recovered from COVID-19, and the process is very similar to giving blood.

“Your body produces antibodies when have fought COVID,” U.S. Surgeon General Vice Admiral Jerome Adams said. “And you can be a superhero to someone this holiday season by giving those antibodies to someone else.”

Adams said convalescent plasma is not only saving the lives of people fighting COVID-19 in the hospital, but it’s giving those who have recovered from it a way to be part of the solution.

“I think it’s something concrete people can hold onto during this holiday season, as we try to get over this last surge and get on the other side of this mountain,” Adams said.
