2 arrested, 1 sought in shooting death of Eustis woman

EUSTIS, Fla. — Lake County deputies arrested two people connected to a shooting death from earlier this year in Eustis.

Deputies said the two people were arrested on charges that include manslaughter, evidence tampering and grand theft.

Two months ago, Alma Menton, 28, was shot to death inside a car.

When deputies first arrived at the scene in January, they said they found a silver SUV on the side of the road near East Bates Avenue and County Road 44.

Investigators said inside the car they found Menton dead.

But deputies said they later found out that Menton was not the only person in the SUV at the time of her death. They said two brothers, Marcus and Anthony Johnson, were with her.

According to investigators, Anthony Johnson admitted to shooting his cousin, Menton, because the stolen gun went off while he was checking to see if it was loaded.

Anthony Johnson was arrested on manslaughter and grand theft charges and Marcus was arrested on dealing stolen property and tampering with evidence charges.

"Anthony Johnson was the shooter. The lady was shot from the back seat of the car with a gun that he had possession of," said Fred Jones of the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

A third man, Damon Evans, who was also in the SUV, remains at large.

Menton had a lengthy criminal history.

But, friends who spoke with WFTV said she was much loved.

"She was a very loving person, very kind person. That's the last thing that you expect to hear and see," said Menton's friend Charra Taylor.

"When you see somebody that is trying to do the right thing and trying to move forward; she was a young lady with her whole life ahead of her. So it is a very sad situation that it ended that way," said Jones.

Anthony Johnson remains in the Lake County Jail on a $32,000 bail. Marcus also remains at the jail, but his bail was set at $7,000.
