$3 million park planned in Oviedo

OVIEDO, Fla. — Plans are in the works to build a massive $3 million park in Oviedo.

The park will be built on a vacant lot within the 60-acre Oviedo on the Park development and will feature amenities like a splash pad, playground, pavilion and amphitheater.

"I think we would have a lot more festivals, things for the kids," said Oveido resident Dena Cole.

The developer of Oviedo on the Park is paying for the park, but taxpayers will have the foot the more than $3 million bill for the amenities.

When asked about the cost, some Oviedo residents said it's not worth the money.

"No, I don't. We already have the aquatic center across the street," said Diane Farell.

Oviedo Mayor Dominic Persampiere defended the plan.

"Oviedo on the Park is going to be the center place of the city. It is really going to give the city that place of purpose," he said.

Persampiere said the city is finally moving forward with the plan, approved by residents years ago when they voted for a bond referendum.

Groundbreaking for Oviedo on the Park is slated for early 2013, but the city doesn't expect the park to be finished until 2015.
