9 things to do: Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival begins, The Great Florida Air Show, 2 rocket launches & more

ORLANDO, Fla. — Here’s a list of what’s happening in Central Florida from May 14 to May 20.

1. Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival begins

The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival will be held this weekend.

The festival is in its 62nd year and it’s one of the nation’s oldest, largest and most prestigious outdoor art festivals.

Organizers said the festival started in March 1960 as a community project to bring local artists and art lovers together.

The festival will run from May 14 to May 16 in Central Park and along Park Avenue in Winter Park.

It will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

2. The Great Florida Air Show

The Great Florida Air Show is coming to Melbourne this weekend.

The air show will be held Saturday and Sunday.

The U.S. Navy Blue Angels will be traveling to the Space Coast to participate in the show.

3. Gatorpalooza returns to Gatorland

Gatorland is bringing back its Gatorpalooza this weekend.

The event will run from May 15 to May 16 and is included with park admission.

Gatorpalooza features live music, different food offerings, artisans, craft vendors, family fun and games.

“We are so excited that we can make Gatorpalooza happen this year for our guests to enjoy,” said Mark McHugh, President and CEO of Gatorland. “We are ready to roll out the fun and excitement the Gatorland way during this special weekend event.”

4. Superhero Sunday FunDay scavenger hunt through downtown Orlando

City District is hosting a Superhero Sunday FunDay in downtown Orlando.

The event features a scavenger hunt through downtown Orlando, with a chance to win more than $1,000 in prizes.

The event will be held May 16 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

5. NOAA scheduled to announce initial outlook for 2021 Atlantic hurricane season

NOAA is set to announce its initial outlook for the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season on May 20.

The update is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.

Speakers will address the anticipated activity for the 2021 hurricane season, which runs June 1 to Nov. 30, and provide information on how to be prepared.

Forecasters with Colorado State University reported last month that they believe there could be as many as 17 named storms for the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season. That would make it the sixth consecutive “above normal” season.

6. ULA to launch Atlas V rocket carrying the SBIRS GEO Flight 5 mission

ULA is preparing to launch a Atlas V rocket carrying the SBIRS GEO Flight 5 mission for the U.S. Space Force’s Space and Missile System Center.

The mission is planned to lift off from Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at 1:35 p.m. Monday.

There’s a 90% chance of favorable weather conditions for launch.

7. SpaceX plans to launch Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral

SpaceX is planning to launch a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral on Saturday.

There’s a 70% chance of favorable weather conditions for launch.

8. Daytona Jazz weekend kicks off Friday

Daytona Jazz weekend will kick off on May 20.

The event will run through May 23 in Daytona Beach.

“The jazz weekend features six of the biggest stars in smooth jazz and partners with The DAYTONA, an Autograph Collection hotel at ONE DAYTONA, on exclusive packages providing accommodations, meals, activities, and concerts,” organizers said.

9. Orange City to host community cleanup event

Orange City officials are hosting a community cleanup event on May 15.

“Teams of families, businesses, churches, groups, agencies or friends will gather to compete in an eco-friendly community-wide cleanup of selected areas within the city for awards, bragging rights and, of course, making a key environmental difference within our region,” organizers said.
