‘A sad day for you,' Florida chief justice tells Seminole County judge during reprimand

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A Seminole County judge found herself on the other side of the bench Tuesday as she was publicly reprimanded by the Florida Supreme Court for her outburst in her courtroom toward a domestic violence victim.

Judge Jerri Collins admitted she was sarcastic and used an inappropriate tone while berating a domestic violence victim who skipped out on her abuser's trial one year ago.

Investigative reporter Karla Ray first exposed the outburst and has followed the developments.

Courtroom video showed Collins yelling repeatedly at the victim, as the victim burst into tears.

“I just…my anxiety,” said the victim through tears.

“You think you’re going to have anxiety now? You haven’t even seen anxiety,” Collins said.

The victim had refused to testify against her abuser.

"The people of Florida know and understand that conduct such as yours will not be tolerated," state Supreme Court Chief Justice Jorge Labarga told Collins.

Collins also had to complete anger management and domestic violence courses.

“Miss Collins, this is indeed a sad day for you. A sad day for the people of Florida, and a sad day for the judiciary on which our people depend for justice,” Labarga said. “I cannot emphasize how intolerable your behavior was in this case.”

Her reprimand marked the final step in her discipline for violating the state’s judicial code of conduct, but Labarga said that if she were to have another complaint against her, her punishment would be harsh.

“It occurred when you berated and belittled a victim of domestic violence for failing to respond to a subpoena issued by the state attorney to testify in the trial against her abuser, who was the father of her child,” Labarga said.

Collins remained silent during the reprimand.

Labarga pointed out that the women Collins sent to jail for contempt was never advised of her right to an attorney after she was ordered to appear in a hearing, after skipping her abuser’s trial. This is a developing story. We’ll have more information on Eyewitness News at 6 p.m.
