ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Two men are still on the loose after an armed carjacking that left a third suspect with a gunshot wound to his buttocks after being shot by an Orange County deputy.
The injured suspect, James Sanders, 19, was shot while trying to escape the scene, investigators said.
Two other suspects, Ricky Harley and Kingler Williams are being sought by deputies.
Raw: Orange County deputy-involved shooting
Sanders was charged with carjacking and robbery with a firearm and for eluding law enforcement officers.
"This is an individual who was very dangerous, very violent, committing the crime that he did, and he also has a prior history," said Capt. Angelo Nieves of the Orange County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies said the victim, who was driving a Hummer, was carjacked at gunpoint on Silver Star Road just before 10 p.m. Sunday. Deputies said Sanders put a gun to the victim's head.
The carjacking was instigated by Harley, who was a middle school friend of the victim, deputies said. He told the victim to meet at the Domino’s Pizza on Silver Star Road to reconnect, they said.
The victim told investigators that Sanders pulled a gun on him, demanded all his property, hit him with the gun and then stole the vehicle.
The victim also accused Harley of pointing a gun at him.
Authorities said they later spotted the Hummer in the Balboa area and tried to pull it over, but the driver sped away.
Deputies said the carjacking suspect, who was armed with a gun, abandoned the Hummer on Carter Street. Investigators said the deputy opened fire, hitting the suspect.
"The suspect bailed out at Collier, leaving the car running, and bailed out with a firearm. At that point, the deputy, fearing for his safety, fired at the suspect, who continued to run with the firearm and was struck at the area of Collier and Carter Street," said Nieves.
Sanders was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center in stable condition.
The deputy, Ryan Oberlander, has been with the Sheriff's Office for 10 years and has been a law enforcement officer for 14 years, investigators said.
He was placed on administrative leave for at least a week, which is standard procedure after a deputy-involved shooting, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating.
Channel 9 found out that Sanders has a criminal history that includes domestic violence and drugs.
