TITUSVILLE, Fla. — An assistant pastor at a Vero Beach church is accused of having sex with 17-year-old boy he met on social media, West Melbourne police said.
The First Christian Church is in Vero Beach, but Wesley Weaver also works as a hospice chaplain in Titusville.
The 17-year-old victim came forward, which led to Weaver’s arrest on charges of sexual battery of a minor, police said.
Police said they are worried there might be other victims.
Weaver made disturbing comments about wanting to have sex with even younger children, police said.
Weaver faced a judge Tuesday.
Kesten said she had seen a lot of young people hanging out at his home.
“Oh, heavens. That's not good,” said neighbor Shari Kesten. “Just a lot of cars in and out, cars parked out on the street.”
Police said a teen boy claims he met Weaver on the phone app Grindr and had sex with him at his West Melbourne home.
The 17-year-old came forward because Weaver made comments, expressing the desire for younger sexual partners,” said police.
“The statements were disturbing enough to the victim that he came forward to us with what occurred to him,” said Capt. Richard Cordeau of the West Melbourne Police Department.
Police did not know if Weaver’s role at the church involves children.
“I'm not worried about myself, but my grandchildren come here at times. There's different grandchildren staying with some of the people," said Kesten.
Weaver remains jailed on $15,000 bail.
If Weaver posts bail, he will not be able to have contact with children.
