Minnesota authorities investigating the death of rock star Prince said he had opioid  medication with him when he was discovered.

A law enforcement official told CNN that Prince had prescriptions for the pills, which were found both on him and in his home.

Opioids  are commonly used to treat and manage different types of pain--still, the drug enforcement agency has been brought in for assistance.

The official also said investigators think a health scare just before the musician's death was likely a reaction to the pain medication.

About a week before Prince was found dead, his plane made an emergency landing in Illinois.

The pilot told air traffic control that a passenger, later known to be Prince, was unresponsive.

He was given treatment for a potential opioid overdose.

Investigators are awaiting results of autopsy and toxicology tests before determining an official cause-of-death for the music icon.

He was 57 years old.
