BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — In Brevard County, tens of thousands of seniors are now vaccinated against COVID-19.
But hundreds of doses of vaccines were reported as “wasted” to the state.
Channel 9 was told that those “wasted” doses weren’t being administered by the health department – they were sent to community partners.
There were a variety of reasons those shots weren’t administered. But the Florida Department of Health said it’s working with community partners to ensure future doses don’t go to waste.
As of Thursday afternoon, a little more than 50,000 people have been vaccinated against COVID-19 in Brevard County.
But 308 doses meant for Brevard-area residents were never administered.

Those vials were broken, either in transit or during administration. Other vials were thawed and unable to be administered within the recommended time for use.
The Florida Department of Health told Channel 9 those doses were not wasted by the county health department, but by community partners.
The state is working with all partners to ensure no additional doses are wasted.

The Florida Department of Health said 99.8% of the doses administered to date are being administered without any issue, spoilage or waste.
There was one notable issue in Palm Beach County where 1,000 doses of vaccine were reported wasted last week.
The Florida Department of Health has called for an audit.
