Primary election, Seminole County students return to school: Here are 9 things happening this week

ORLANDO, Fla. — Central Floridians can vote in Florida’s primary election and Seminole County students are going back to school this week.

Here’s a look at nine things happening this week:

1. Primary election to be held Tuesday

The primary election will be held Tuesday in Florida.

The ballot will include partisan primary races for several congressional and legislative seats. Residents can cast ballots in several local contests, many of which are nonpartisan.

For partisan contests, only those registered as Democrats or Republicans will be able to cast their ballot.

Those affiliated with minor parties or no party affiliation can vote in nonpartisan races or contests where all candidates are from the same party.

2. Channel 9 to host “Central Florida Decides” following primary election

Channel 9 will be hosting “Central Florida Decides” Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

We will bring you live coverage, in-depth analysis and up to the minute results.

The special is also streaming on WFTV Now, which is free on Roku, Apple TV and Amazon Fire.

3. Seminole CARES Small Business Grants launches Wednesday

The online application portal for Seminole CARES Small Business Grants is scheduled to launch Wednesday, officials said.

Small business owners can apply for $5,000, $10,000 or $15,000 grants.

4. Seminole County students return to school

Seminole County students will return to school Monday

Seminole County Public Schools approved a plan for the upcoming school year, which includes starting the school year Monday.

Parents were given four options to choose how they want their children to go back to school for the upcoming year.

The choices included face-to-face learning, Seminole Connect, Seminole County Virtual School and a hybrid option.

Students, staff members and visitors are required to wear a face covering when on school property.

5. NBA playoffs begin

The NBA playoffs in the Disney bubble start Monday.

Fans of the Orlando Magic will have to wait until Tuesday for the team to step onto the court.

The Magic will be facing the Milwaukee Bucks.

6. Free COVID-19 testing at Econ Soccer Park in Orange County

Officials said free COVID-19 testing will continue at Econ Soccer Complex. The site will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

Testing is now available for those 12 years and older.

7. DeLand mayor holds backpack giveaway

After the event was postponed due to Hurricane Isaias, the mayor of DeLand will hold a backpack giveaway for families struggling due to the pandemic this week.

Organizers said the 10th Annual Mayor’s Backpack Giveaway is scheduled to take place from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Dr. Joyce M. Cusack Resource Center, 489 West Mathis Avenue.

Backpacks will be pre-filled with supplies and students must be present to receive a backpack, organizers said.

To make the pick-up as contactless as possible, residents may pull up to the resource center, open the trunk of their vehicle and volunteers will place backpacks in the vehicle, organizers said.

8. Central Florida’s Visitor Information Center to host “Back to School Kick-off” Saturday in Polk County

The Central Florida’s Visitor Information Center said it will host a “Back to School Kick-off” event Saturday in Davenport.

The event will take place from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. The first 300 students will receive a free backpack.

Attendees will have a chance to win one of two pairs of LEGOLAND Florida tickets being given away through a random drawing, organizers said.

9. City of Orlando offers free COVID-19 testing to residents

The city of Orlando will open an additional free mobile COVID-19 drive-thru testing site Wednesday.

The testing site is located at Camping World Stadium, 1 Citrus Bowl Place from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

There is no symptom criteria for testing but appointments are required.

Individuals must be 18 years or older and show a valid Orlando or Orange County ID.
