Brevard schools discipline committee looks to reduce incidents in the classroom

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Brevard public schools new discipline steering committee met for the first time Friday to address concerns about disruptive and dangerous behavior in the classroom.

The group of school administrators and union leaders is tasked with reviewing the district’s student conduct and discipline policies.

Brevard Federation of Teachers president Anthony Colucci said the time for changes is now.

“This union has been fighting week after week, month after month, year after year to make some improvements, and we feel a little deflated that nothing’s happening quickly,” Colucci said

Board member Gene Trent said he wants parents and students to be part of the conversation.

“These are the people that live it, be it the teachers union, the union for the cafeteria and bus drivers, and the administration. So really, this is something that is needed, Trent said.

Trent said he’s planning a series of town hall meetings at area schools he hopes will lead to strategies that can be implemented without needing official approval from the board.
