Brevard teen killed in skateboarding accident

MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. — Florida Highway Patrol launched an investigation into a Brevard County teen’s skateboarding death.

Haley Hodge, 17, fell from her skateboard on Saturday in Merritt Island as she was being towed by a car near Tropical Trail.

Troopers didn’t know a vehicle was involved in the crash until recently and now charges are possible against the driver.

FHP said the driver of the Toyota Celeca that was towing Hodge is cooperating.

“They were towing each other, taking turns on south Tropical Trail. It was the young lady’s turn to be towed,” said Lt. Channing Taylor of the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said she was being towed at just 15 miles per hour when she may have hit a reflector in the road.

It is illegal to tow someone from a vehicle so charges may be filed.

“If it’s something that’s recklessly and willfully and wanton, it can go to a criminal violation. That doesn’t appear to be the case here. It just appears to be a tragic accident,” said Taylor.

Many of Hodge’s friends at Satellite High School are still coming to terms with her loss.

“She really did love to skateboard. It’s been hard,” said student Mason Witchard.

The high school’s staff is on hand to speak to any students that need counseling.

“She was just one of those outgoing girls. If you were a new student she’d come give you a hug,” said student Dustin Hesse.

A memorial service for Hodge will be held on Saturday at Trinity Wellsprings Church.
