Cash, electronics stolen from Lake County nonprofit

CLERMONT, Fla. — A Lake County group that helps homeless people is trying rebound itself after thieved broke into their office and stole cash and electronics.

The New Beginnings organization is having a hard time putting a value on the loss.

“I was shocked,” said Krysta Smith, who works with New Beginnings. “Police took us in one at a time to see what was missing from our offices.”

Smith showed police where her laptop used to be. It’s how she makes graphics to market the nonprofit in Clermont that helps homeless people throughout Lake County find jobs and get back on their feet.

“Everything that was taken was a donation of some sort,” she said.

Someone broke in Monday night and stole cash, laptops and cameras that were locked away in several offices.

WFTV found out their Minneola office has been broken into before.

Each time, they were able to rebuild and they can still make the most out of their daily functions despite the theft, but they do need them for marketing and other important aspects. The hard part is figuring out how much it will cost to replace everything since it was all donated in the first place.

“At this time we really don’t know what our next step will be,” Smith said.

Clermont police are investigating the case.
