SANFORD, Fla. — The Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens in Sanford will host a new Labor Day weekend event, “Red, White & Indigo: Celebrating Wild America,” this Saturday, Sept. 5.
The celebration will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and feature live entertainment, animal experiences, and family activities focused on native wildlife conservation.
The event combines holiday festivities with a spotlight on wildlife preservation, specifically supporting the zoo’s Orianne Center for Indigo Conservation. A total of $2 from every admission ticket sold will directly fund the center’s ongoing breeding and reintroduction program for the Eastern indigo snake.
At the center of the event’s conservation focus is the Orianne Center for Indigo Conservation, which works to restore the Eastern indigo snake to its native habitat. Dr. James E. Bogan Jr. will give a presentation detailing the center’s work to reintroduce the species to longleaf pine forests across the Southeastern United States.
In addition to conservation presentations, the event will feature a live DJ, Keeper Chats, and family activities throughout the zoo. Visitors can also access regular zoo attractions, including giraffe feedings, Barnyard Buddies, the Herpetarium, train rides, and the splash pad.
A special event menu includes smoked brisket, pulled chicken, potato salad, kettle chips, funnel cakes, Rocket Pop Floats, and Firecracker Shaved Ice.
Central Florida Zoo CEO Richard Glover Jr. emphasized the event’s mix of recreation and wildlife preservation efforts.“Red, White & Indigo is a great way to celebrate our country and the wild side of America while supporting efforts to protect the Eastern indigo snake,” Glover said. “From live entertainment and great food to unique conservation experiences, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.”
General admission tickets are $25.95 for adults, $21.95 for seniors, and $19.95 for children ages 3 to 12.
Children aged 2 and under are admitted free. Annual passholders receive admission as part of their membership, with a suggested $2 donation at the admissions window to support the conservation center.
