Clermont considers future plans for old 8th Street Pier

CLERMONT, Fla. — The city of Clermont is looking for input and considering plans to renovate the 8th Street Pier and the surrounding park area.

Concept plans include adding space for 76 boats and eight jet skis at the site of the old 8th Street Pier right on Lake Minneola in downtown Clermont.

The city shut down the pier last year because of concerns about safety.

City Manager Brian Bulthuis said that’s why the city is now looking at what to do with it next.

The city presented concept plans last week in a public meeting that would redevelop the area with seating, picnic areas, restrooms and  enhancements to the pedestrian and bike trails. City officials said it would make a good rest spot for the middle of Florida’s coast-to-coast trail.

“I think it’s a great idea. It’ll draw attention down to this downtown area, which is an amazing location, resident Kristina Buhrman said.

Some in the community believe it will benefit downtown businesses by giving visitors more options on how to get here, but not everyone likes the idea.

“And the idea of having 76 boats and jet skis, messing with the peace and quality of life of the residents here. It’s very disconcerting,” resident Chandra Myers said.

The city will continue to gather public input before making a final decision.
