Construction resumes at Port Canaveral terminal after steel beam falls on restaurant

PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. — Port Canaveral has made changes to its construction work because of a weekend accident that sent a steel beam crashing onto a restaurant roof over the weekend.

The accident happened Sunday morning at the Grill's Seafood Deck and Tiki Bar on Glen Cheek Drive when a 100-foot beam from a nearby construction site fell over and collapsed onto the restaurant's bathroom.

No injuries were reported and construction on Port Canaveral's Cruise One terminal resumed on Monday.

On Monday, the restaurant's owner said he talked with the contractor to find out what went wrong.

"It was a combination of some miscommunication and some high winds that caused one of these large seawall panels they were in the process of sinking to fall over," he said.

The restaurant's owner said that any construction work that needs to be done close to the deck where people eat will only happen when the restaurant is closed.

Port officials would only say they are now investigating the accident.

Patrons believe the construction site should have had more protection.

"It was actually a very scary moment. This was way too close to having a construction site and open for business," said one patron.

The beam has since been removed from the restaurant.

The restaurant's manager said he is still working to get an estimate to see what it's going to cost to fix portions of the restrooms.
