Police: Officer involved shooting in Ocala leaves subject in critical condition

OCALA, Fla. — Update:

Ocala police provided Channel 9 with the following statement:

“We can address that the subject was armed with pepper spray and a knife when contact was made by the officers. The subject is out of surgery and has additional pending medical procedures. The subject is in serious condition.”

Ocala police were involved in a shooting Sunday afternoon on Southwest 27th Avenue.

Officers were called about a 23-year-old man who was being taken to The Vines Hospital by family members.

Prior to the officer’s arrival, the man fled the area, acting erratically, according to Ocala Police Department’s Facebook page.

Officers then began searching for the man.

Around 12:38 p.m., officers located the man on Southwest 27th Avenue.

When police approached the man, there was “an immediate threat” and officers shot the man.

The man was struck by gunfire and taken to HCA hospital in Ocala for treatment. He is in critical condition.

No officers were harmed in the shooting.

This incident is currently under investigation and more details will be shared later.
