MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. — Deputies rescued a woman in a wheelchair and her dog from a fire, Brevard County authorities said.

Cpl. Dave Jacobs said in a news release that three deputies were called early Friday to a house fire at a Merritt Island home on Lynne Drive.

The news release said Doucette crawled through the heat and smoke and dragged her to safety. He and Deputy Ben Fisher performed first aid until firefighters arrived.
