Developer uses social media to get ideas for Oviedo shopping plaza

OVIEDO, Fla. — A developer is asking the public what it wants to see built at an abandoned shopping plaza in Oviedo.

For the last five years, the old Albertson's plaza on Mitchell Hammock Road has sat empty.

"(It's) kind of lonesome, dying really," said Bonnie Morales.

But a developer recently purchased the property and is using social media to get input from the public.

Hundreds of residents have submitted ideas on Facebook about what businesses they would like to see built at the shopping center.

"A Publix store or Winn Dixie, something like that," said Bob Morales.

Residents have also proposed a Trader Joe's, Jason's Deli and an ice skating rink, to name a few. One person was stern in insisting that there be "no Walmart of any kid."

"I'm surprised at how many people are actively involved in it," resident Carolyn Klages said.

The project is in its brainstorming phase and there's no time frame on when changes could begin.
