Downtown Orlando enjoys Halloween fun with increased safety measures

ORLANDO, Fla. — On the night before Halloween, people are heading to Downtown Orlando in costume to enjoy the nightlife.

Orlando Police said they will keep a close eye on crowds and there are roadblocks on Orange Avenue to keep people safe.

This comes amid a crackdown on crime and the enacting of security checkpoints after multiple shootings this summer.

But there was not a massive police presence Sunday night compared to other nights during the week and other weekends.

After a mass shooting closed out last year’s Halloween festivities, safety is still a concern.

The people who went out on the town said they planned to come out early and leave before the night soured.

Sunday nights are typically quieter for the bar scene.

It is unclear how many people plan to return to Orange Avenue for the actual holiday since it falls on a work night.

State troopers and Orange County deputies said they will increase their presence on Monday night to keep trick-or-treaters safe and drunk drivers off the road.

Halloween is also the most dangerous night for pedestrians during the year, according to a study that examined 42 years of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data.

Orlando Police ask parents to always accompany their children as they walk door-to-door.

They also encourage parents to teach their children to look both ways before crossing the street, use traffic signals and crosswalks and walk, not run, from house to house.
