Eye on the Tropics: Peak of hurricane season update and safety tips

ORLANDO, Fla. — Earl is no longer a hurricane Saturday, said meteorologist George Waldenberger.

He said it has lost tropical characteristics and is now an “extratropical low.”

Earl is still producing hurricane-force winds about 2,000 miles to our northeast.

Some of the wave action from this distant system has brought wave heights up at our beaches.

Over the course of the next few weeks, Severe Weather Center 9 will monitor additional tropical waves tracking across the Atlantic for development, but for now, there are no tropical threats.

Sept. 10 also marks the peak of hurricane season.

As five years since Hurricane Irma approaches, Florida Power & Light Company has the following safety tips to help families stay safe:

  • Develop an emergency plan and review it with your family.
  • Make arrangements for loved ones who need to use electric-powered medical equipment.
  • Read the instructions to properly use a generator, and never use a generator indoors.
  • Trim trees before a storm approaches.
  • Take pictures of your home for insurance purposes and keep important records in waterproof containers.
  • Stock up on supplies.

Hurricane season ends on Nov. 30.
