VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla.,None — A Volusia County highway reopened on Monday after smoke from a nearby smoldering wildfire, forced officials to close Highway 17 near Barberville.
Fire officials told WFTV the fire may have started from a lightning strike, but their main concern is the smoke.
The wildfire fire tore through 60 acres of Barberville Sunday night.
Volusia County officials said an off-duty firefighter discovered the blaze when it was only one acre, just before 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Officials said it took 10 minutes for the fire to spread to 15 acres, but dry conditions along with 30 mph winds and a large supply of brush caused the fire to spread to 60 acres.
"When you have these current weather conditions and the humidity is so low no, it's not uncommon," said Nick Castelli of the Volusia County Fire Services.
Fire crews said there were no homes or businesses being threatened.
"As it gets to that point, we have engines patrolling and standing by the structures as it moves by the structures," said Castelli.
A crew from the sky monitored the fire, making sure the flames did not cross the road, which is where there are some homes.
