Hotel catches fire after electric scooter battery explodes

DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. — A high-rise hotel and condominium was evacuated early Monday due to a fire, Daytona Beach Fire Department said.

Firefighters said the Hawaiian Inn Beach Resort at 2301 South Atlantic Avenue in Daytona Beach Shores caught fire just after 1 a.m.

The five-story commercial hotel and condominium had smoke and flames coming from the south stairwell balcony on the third floor, firefighters said.

According to firefighters, occupants were evacuated from portions of the third floor due to smoke conditions.

The fire was under control in 15 minutes.

No one was injured in the fire.

Investigators said the fire was caused by an electric scooter’s battery pack exploding. They said the battery pack released dark smoke and caught a phone book on fire.
