WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Five people were displaced after a fire damaged several apartments in Winter Haven, according to the Winter Haven Fire Department.
Fire officials said crews responded around 10:55 a.m. to the Haven at Lake Deer apartments on 24th Street, where firefighters found heavy fire coming from one apartment.
The department said crews evacuated neighboring apartments and brought the fire under control within about 20 minutes.
Firefighters rescued four kittens and one dog during the response, according to the department. Officials said no residents or firefighters were injured.
The department said four apartments sustained fire, smoke or water damage, and the American Red Cross is assisting the five adults who were displaced.
Fire officials said the preliminary investigation indicates the fire started in the laundry area, but the cause remains under investigation.
Winter Haven Fire Chief Drew Neubrand said a working smoke detector alerted the occupant and gave them time to safely evacuate.
