Florida sees mad dash for COVID-19 vaccines after federal government moves to expand eligibility

ORLANDO, Fla. — Just a day after federal vaccination sites were mostly empty, Thursday was a different story.

People packed into several locations, and thanks to new orders from the president, teachers were part of those crowds.

After hundreds of vaccine doses were left untouched on Wednesday, all of the Federal Emergency Management sites filled up Thursday.

A satellite site at St. Cloud Civic Center reached its 500-person capacity at 12:30 p.m. A site in the Englewood area closed at around 3 p.m. after 503 people got the shot.

Since the start of the vaccine rollout, people have asked to get K-12 Florida teachers and school staff of all ages access to the COVID-19 vaccine.

Gon. Ron DeSantis recently gave teachers 50 and up the go-ahead, but then President Joe Biden said all teachers, regardless of age can get the shot.

That news opened up the flood gates, and hundreds of school staff showed up to the FEMA sites where no appointments are needed.

The FEMA vaccine site at the Valencia College West Campus exceeded capacity on Thursday after more than 2,000 showed up.

Crews expect the mad dash for shots to continue after this newly expanded eligibility from the federal government.
