ORANGE COUNTY, Fla.,None — Firefighters said a grease fire destroyed an Orange County home Wednesday night.
Officials said the fire started at the home on Broadway Street while a woman was cooking and it took only seconds for the entire kitchen wall to catch fire.
Firefighters said the blaze then spread throughout the house, but crews were forced to wait outside for at least 10 minutes because of ammunition inside the home.
"The first crews pulled up, you could hear ammunition going off inside the house, and unfortunately we had to back off for a more defensive posture," Assistant Fire Chief Brian Morrow said.
Officials said a pregnant woman and her young child escaped the burning home safely.
The woman's husband wasn't home at the time of the fire.
"I came home, and when I got here, everything was gone," Lester Threntham told WFTV.
Neighbors said they saw the flames and heard the popping of the ammunition.
"It was real high flames within 10 minutes," neighbor Lamar Carpenter said.
Threntham said he had just bought several new items for his baby.
"I went Thursday and bought everything for the baby, strollers, car seats, clothes, and a crib."
But Threntham told WFTV he's just glad his family got out safely.
"Everything in the house is replaceable, my family's not," he said.
Threntham also said their renters' insurance had just expired.
Officials said the fire spread quickly because of the house's wood frame.
The family said they have relatives in the area to help them out and also spoke to The Red Cross.
