GROVELAND, Fla. — The City of Groveland urges residents and conservation advocates to support efforts to preserve Wilson Island, a 177-acre property along the Palatlakaha River, as Lake County considers funding its purchase for public conservation.
The property is entitled for 181 single-family homes and 85,592 square feet of commercial and mixed-use development. While the landowners prefer preservation, development remains possible if public funding is not secured.
“Wilson Island is a unique element of Groveland’s natural charm, and Thursday’s meeting is a critical forum for supporters to share their voices and help shape what comes next,” interim Community and Economic Development Director Andrew Landis said. “We want our residents to participate in this conversation.”
If acquired, Wilson Island would preserve one of Groveland’s last opportunities for public access to the Clermont Chain of Lakes. The city envisions a waterfront park with nature trails, paddling and kayaking access, fishing areas, stargazing sites, picnic space, wildlife habitat protection, and water-quality improvements.
After Thursday’s meeting, the advisory committee will send its funding recommendations to the Lake County Board of County Commissioners, which will make the final decision.
