‘Hamilton,’ ‘Wicked’ returning to Dr. Phillips Center for 2020-21 season

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts has announced that Tony Award-winning musicals “Hamilton” and “Wicked” will return to Central Florida as part of the expanded Fairwinds Broadway in Orlando 2020-21 season.

The full Broadway in Orlando 14-week season will be announced Feb. 20. “Hamilton” and “Wicked” are expected to run for several weeks, the center said.

“Hamilton," written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, tells the story of founding father Alexander Hamilton featuring a score that blends hip-hop, R&B and Broadway.

The Broadway blockbuster made waves in Central Florida when tickets last went on sale in November 2018. About 37,000 people were in an online “waiting room” for hours, hoping to score their tickets. Hundreds more waited at the Dr. Phillips Center box office for hours, some even camped out overnight.

“Wicked” tells the story of the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good long before the events of “The Wizard of Oz.” It has been seen by nearly 60 million people worldwide through national and international tours, according to the Dr. Phillips Center.

Individual ticket sales will be announced at a later date.

Broadway in Orlando subscribers can renew their accounts online beginning at 7 p.m. Feb. 20 or by phone beginning Feb. 21 at 10 a.m. by calling 800-448-6322.

Renewing subscribers can add “Hamilton” to their subscriptions and “Wicked” is available as a season add-on, the Dr. Phillips Center said.

The big shows come amid the plans to complete construction on, and open, the entire Dr. Phillips Center this year. Steinmetz Hall will debut in September with the Green Room opening shortly after.

The Orlando City Council recently approved a joint agreement for $19 million to offset ballooning construction costs.
