Hazmat crews to remove old batteries found at former DeLand courthouse

DELAND, Fla. — Fire rescue officials said very old batteries were discovered at the former courthouse building in DeLand on Monday.

Authorities said that lead-acid batteries were found on the top floor of the courthouse, which was built in 1929.

Several hazmat crews responded to the old courthouse on New York Avenue after the discovery Monday morning.

No one was evacuated from the building, and crews are instead waiting for employees to leave for the day before removing the batteries.

While fire rescue was on scene, a fire alarm in the building went off, and it was evacuated for about five minutes. It's unclear what caused the alarm to go off.

Officials said the batteries were once used as part of a backup lighting system.
