Judge expedites hearings of educators’ lawsuit over reopening schools in Florida

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A judge agreed Monday to expedite hearings for a lawsuit filed by Florida’s largest teacher’s union over the safety of the start of school.

The Florida Educators Association argues that by forcing brick and mortal schools to reopen, Gov. Ron DeSantis and other state leaders are failing to keep schools safe and secure, something required by the state constitution.

The FEA is seeking a temporary injunction to keep schools throughout the state from reopening later this month.

DeSantis and Florida Department of Education want the case dismissed, in part because they believe the suit was filed in the wrong county.

The judge from the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida in Miami-Dade County agreed to host additional hearings this week on Thursday and Friday.
