Potholes are going unfilled because of an asphalt shortage.

Potholes on Hancock Road were supposed to be filled by now, but supply chain issues and high costs are making it difficult.

Lake County Commission Chairman Sean Parks said the asphalt shortage is severe, and companies that can get their hands on it are overcharging.

“The prices of asphalt and material have gone up anywhere from 70% to 80%, just in one year,” Parks said.

Under current price trends, a company that would have done a road resurfacing project for about $1 million is now asking for about $2 million.

Lake County said it isn’t ready to pay those price, and has delayed projects.

“Because the cost is so high, they’re getting more lucrative work in other parts of the state, maybe even other parts of the country that are paying those higher prices,” Parks said.

He added that he hopes the board will pull money from reserves to have it ready for when asphalt becomes more readily available and the prices lower.
