Killer's efforts to gain release delayed because of paperwork error

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A man convicted of the brutal murder of an Orlando teenager 17 years ago was in court Thursday hoping to get a public defender in his efforts to gain his release.

Jimmy Bedoya's request for a public defender was denied by a judge.

The judge told Bedoya he did not file paperwork to bring a new issue before the court.

Bedoya was 16 years old when investigators said he murdered 17-year-old Shauna Card.

Card was found stabbed to death at her mother's Orlando apartment off of Orange Blossom Trail in January 1995. She had been stabbed 70 times.

Three years later Bedoya was found guilty of her murder.

Bedoya was trying to get his life sentence overturned after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that life sentences are no longer mandatory for juveniles convicted of first-degree murder.

Bedoya was returned to the Orange County jail.

The judge ordered Bedoya be returned to Department of Corrections custody within 48 hours.
