LAKE COUNTY, Fla.,None — A Lake County teacher who got national attention for posting anti-gay comments on Facebook is stirring up more controversy with a new video.
Mount Dora High School teacher Jerry Buell joined the National Organization for Marriage. It's a nonprofit that raises money to oppose gay marriage.
Buell is one of the faces of its new national campaign, "Marriage Anti-Defamation Alliance." He’s in a video on the organization’s website.
"The story about New York Okaying same sex unions came on and it made me want to throw up," he said.
In August, Buell made news when the district suspended him for several harsh anti-gay marriage posts on his personal Facebook page.
Several activist groups are complaining about the issue.
A letter from the Holocaust Memorial Resource Center of Florida calls on the district to reprimand Buell and expand its discrimination policy. Equality Florida wants the same.
"We are going to continue building pressure around the school district to do what's right, which is to update their anti-bullying policy," said Joe Saunders of Equality Florida.
But the district said there's nothing wrong with Buell's affiliation with the National Organization of Marriage because the new video isn't specifically directed at students, but his Facebook comments were.
WFTV showed seniors at Mount Dora High School the video and they agreed with school officials.
"The problem before is he put it on Facebook, and it was connected to students at the high school," said senior Shain Gothan.
They suggested Buell stay out of the spotlight for a while.
"I think he should've dropped it," said one student.
WFTV contacted Buell and his attorney, but did not receive a call back as of Thursday morning.
