GROVELAND, Fla. — A 58-year-old man was killed Saturday night after being struck by a vehicle near Mount Pleasant and Varnado roads, according to the Groveland Police Department.
Investigators believe the man was hit by the vehicle’s front fender, struck the windshield, and traveled briefly before resting in the field. The vehicle was towed, and the victim was handed over to the Medical Examiner’s Office.
Police said officers were dispatched around 9:59 p.m. Aug. 9 after the driver called 911, reporting that an unknown man had struck and shattered her windshield while she was traveling north on Mount Pleasant Road.
The driver told dispatchers she continued about 177 yards before calling because she was scared and could not locate the man.
Officers later found the victim in a grassy field along the northbound shoulder of Mount Pleasant Road. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Groveland Police’s Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating.
