SUMMERFIELD, Fla. — A lightning strike is believed to have sparked a house fire Friday night in Summerfield, according to Marion County Fire Rescue.
Firefighters responded around 8 p.m. to a home in the 14000 block of SE 97th Terrace after the homeowner reported lightning had struck the residence and smoke was coming from inside.
Crews from Spruce Creek Station 30 arrived within minutes and found heavy smoke throughout the attic and fire burning in the roof trusses. Firefighters entered the home, completed a primary search, and confirmed no one was inside before beginning fire suppression efforts.
Additional crews from The Villages, Shady, Belleview, and Weirsdale stations assisted in bringing the fire under control.
Officials said no civilians or firefighters were injured.
The fire was brought under control at approximately 8:28 p.m. Crews remained on scene afterward to extinguish hot spots and ensure the fire was fully out.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though initial reports indicate it was triggered by a lightning strike.
